This year's speaker is Hisashi Ishitobi, who you might recognize from Shuyokai, Family Camp, or the youth sleepover night with Operation Tomodachi. We're still looking for people who are interested in leading a cabin or being on the worship team.

Midwinter is from December 26 ~ 28th, Monday through Wednesday. We hope you'll be able to come!

Starfield Concert on October 23rd

I first heard the band Starfield at a Christian music festival many years ago. I didn't know who they were and I hadn't heard any of their songs before then, but I truly enjoyed worshiping with them. Since then, they have become one of my favorite bands, and I love how their songs often speak of God and His amazing qualities. They sing of how broken we are, and how much we need God to save us. They have four albums and each one is filled with beautiful worship songs.

I want you to enjoy worshiping with Starfield, too! They are coming to the Bay Area on Sunday, October 23rd! Tickets are only $10 if you buy them in advance, or $15 if you wait until that day. If you're interested, please see me (Satomi) before October 14th so I can buy you a ticket and arrange rides for you.

Bring a snack to share! Siblings are invited, as long as they have a parent to supervise. And even if you don't want to swim, you can still come and hang out, or even do some crafts together.

Tim Be Told coming September 17th!

Peninsula Free Methodist Church is hosting the band Tim Be Told on September 17th at 7:30 PM.

Tim Be Told is a contemporary Christian band from Virginia. The group consists of songwriter and frontman Tim Ouyang, guitarist Andrew Chae, and drummer Caleb Wu.

With each show, the band gains new listeners with their infectious guitar hooks, captivating melodies, and driving rhythm parts; but most importantly, they hope that their music will cause people to view life through a different lens, one of honesty, hope, redemption, and change.

"I write about God, about love, disappointment, disbelief, faith, and hope," says Ouyang of his songwriting. "The goal is to use experiences from my life to tell a greater story of human experience that everyone can relate to; and perhaps help find some peace and resolve in a world that is often chaotic and lonely."

2011 Japan Mission Team: Operation Tomodachi

The Mission Team from Koganei and Sakuragaoka is coming August 7 - 16th!

The team's name is "Operation Tomodachi," which comes from the name of the US armed forces relief assistance operation after the March 11th earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Many Japanese people were strengthened and encouraged through the operation, and so now they believe it is time to share the most powerful source of relief and hope to Japan and to the world: God's word, God's hope, God's love.

I'll be posting more information about their time at Peninsula soon. I hope you will pray for the team now as they prepare for their trip and welcome them when they arrive!

30 Hour Famine

Only a few days till the 30 Hr. Famine!!! I'm getting even more excited for this weekend and can't wait to see how much more God will bless this time! But, there are a couple of things I wanted to remind people of.

First one is: don't forget to raise funds! So, you all saw that giant map of the world with hearts at church, right? That represents all of the money we've raised so far, and we're doing really great! That doesn't mean we stop though. Please keep sharing about what you're doing with family, friends, teachers, classmates, and keep asking for donations!

Also, if you plan to participate in the famine you first need to fill out a permission slip (http://peninsulafmc.org/forms/30HF_Parent_Consent_Form.pdf)

and get it signed by your parents! Don't forget to bring it to church and give it to one of the staff.

The event starts this Friday (April 29th), so please come to church at 6:00pm with your collection envelopes. We are sleeping at the church so bring a sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries, clothes and anything else you might need for one night.

The famine begins at 12:30 on the same Friday, so: eat lunch on Friday. DON'T eat anything after lunch! Only fruit juice and water---NO Jamba Juice, milk, coffee, etc. Got it?

30 Hour Famine: April 29 - 30, 2011

The youth group will be having the 30 Hour Famine this year on April 29 - 30, 2011.

For those of you who don’t know, the 30 Hour Famine is an event backed by World Vision, which is designed to aid students in raising awareness to world hunger. World Vision is an international Christian ministry that aids millions of people and distributes food to people in need.

Every day, hunger kills nearly 8,000 kids under age 5. That’s one child every 10 seconds. And every night, more than a billion people go to bed hungry. That’s 1 in 6 people on the planet. The theme for this year is: love hungry.

For those of you who don't know how the famine works, what we will be doing is going for 30 hours without food to raise money to help kids in need. $30 can help provide food for a hungry child for a whole month, and so the suggested donation is $30.

The youth group talked about the event, set fundraising goals, and all received envelopes for collecting donations. For the next few weeks leading up to the famine, the youth participating are going to be telling friends/family and other people that they are involved in the 30 Hour Famine and asking for donations to help hungry people around the world.

Starting at 12:30 pm on Friday, April 29th we will begin the actual famine, and end on Saturday at 6:30 pm. On the 29th, starting at 6:00 pm, we will meet at the church and stay overnight there. We will be having games, activities, doing a service project, and learning more about world hunger. On the 30th we will break our fast with a meal.

Also, I wanted to let you know that going without food for 30 hours, although it’s uncomfortable, is not dangerous, and we will be having regular water/juice breaks. If you have questions, there’s a lot of information on the 30 Hr. Famine website, or you can email me and I’ll do my best to get back to you.

Youth Group Snow/Ski Trip

The youth group will have a high school ski/snow trip on March 26-27.

We will stay in a cabin at Tahoe Donner. We are planning to ski at Alpine Meadows – but if the snow is bad, we’ll go to Boreal.

The cost is: $45 per person includes: lunch & dinner on Sat and breakfast & lunch on Sun.

This does not include ski/snowboard rentals, lift tickets & dinner on the way home (or snacks at the ski lodge)

Karen/Karenni Thailand Refugee clothing drive
The Karen & Karenni people are among some of the ethnic groups found in the Southeast Asian countries such as Burma, Malaysia, Laos and Thailand. Presently, the Karen & Karenni people are enduring religious persecution and an ethnic cleansing program in Eastern Burma. They have moved to Oakland and the change from their former life to living in the US is huge. Please bring clean/lightly worn clothing (especially warm winter clothing) or shoes of all sizes!

Midwinter is coming December 29 - 31, 2010 at Redwood Christian Camp in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This year's theme is about being made new again when we give our lives to God.

The Golden Rule

At youth group, we have been learning about the greatest commandment, to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. And the second is to love your neighbor as yourself.

I came across this song by Above The Golden State at the beginning of summer, and it's been replaying on the iPod a lot recently. It's a fun song called "The Golden Rule" and it puts what we've been learning simply: "Love your Savior and your neighbor like yourself."

High schoolers and staff members are invited to Tahoe for two days of snow fun on March 20 - 21. We will leave early Saturday morning and return Sunday night. For those who ski or snowboard, we will be going to Alpine Meadows and Sugar Bowl. You have to bring your own equipment and pay for your own tickets and food.

Japan Mission Trip 2010

We are now accepting applications for the Japan Mission Trip 2010 team. We're looking for youth attending PFMC who are interested in a short term mission trip to Japan. Team members are expected to actively participate in activities supporting the ministries at Tokyo Free Methodist Koganei Church, including a children's VBS program, summer youth retreat, and worship services. Ability to speak or understand Japanese is not required--only the willingness to serve and work together as a team, representing Christ and Peninsula Free Methodist Church.

The exact dates are not finalized but will be around July 27 - August 9, 2010.

Requirements:

- Current high school or college student.

- Baptized or will be baptized before July 2010.

- Regularly attend Peninsula Free Methodist Church services or youth group.

- Available for team meetings before and after the mission trip.

- Have a valid passport.

- Have a heart and passion for serving Japanese children and teenagers.
